On November 20, 2021, Varun Gandhi, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), addressed Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the ongoing farmers' agitation. He urged the Prime Minister to promptly address the farmers' demands, particularly the need for a legal framework on Minimum Support Price (MSP) and other pressing issues, to enable farmers to return home after their protest.
Over the past year, the farmers' movement has gained significant momentum nationwide, primarily focusing on the repeal of three controversial farm laws and a statutory assurance of MSP for various crops. Varun Gandhi commended PM Modi for his decision to repeal these laws but stressed that more action is needed.
Gandhi highlighted the tragic loss of over 700 farmer lives during the protests, emphasizing the need for the government to express condolences. He proposed that each martyr's family be granted compensation of Rs 1 crore. Additionally, he called for the immediate quashing of any politically motivated FIRs filed against farmers during the agitation, labeling these as tools of harassment.
Gandhi pointed out that more than 85% of farmers in India are small and marginal, and ensuring they receive fair prices for their crops is crucial for their empowerment. He asserted that the farmers' agitation would persist until the statutory guarantee of MSP is provided, based on the C2+50% formula from the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices. He urged the government to accept this demand without delay, as it would significantly bolster the economic security of farmers and improve their living conditions.
In light of recent events, including the tragic incident on October 3, where five farmers were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri, Gandhi condemned the provocative statements made by senior leaders against protesting farmers. He called for strict action against the Union Minister linked to this incident to ensure a fair inquiry and uphold the integrity of democracy.
Gandhi stressed that democracy thrives on constitutional values, dialogue, and empathy. He expressed hope that PM Modi would be responsive to the farmers’ issues and that addressing these concerns would enhance his respect and standing within the country. He urged for a decisive resolution soon.
