GSTN Launches Geocoding for Additional Places of Business Addresses

Introduction

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has activated the geocoding functionality for “Additional Place of Business” addresses across all States and Union Territories. This enhancement builds on the previously implemented geocoding for the principal place of business, introduced in February 2023. As of now, over 2.05 crore addresses have been geocoded to ensure transparency and accuracy, supporting compliance with GST regulations.

  1. Geocoding Activation: GSTN is excited to announce that the geocoding functionality for the “Additional Place of Business” address is now operational across all States and Union Territories. This follows the successful geocoding for the principal place of business initiated in February 2023.

  2. Address Geocoding Statistics: To date, GSTN has geocoded over 2.05 crore addresses encompassing both principal and additional places of business. Since March 2022, all newly registered addresses have been geocoded during the registration process, enhancing the accuracy and standardization of information from the outset.

  3. Utilization Guide: Here’s how taxpayers can utilize this new feature:

    • Accessing the Feature: Navigate to Services > Registration > Geocoding Business Addresses on the FO portal to access the geocoding functionality.
    • Using the Geocoded Address: The system will present a geocoded address. You may accept this provided address or modify it to suit your needs. If no system-generated address is available, you can enter a geocoded address manually.
    • Viewing Geocoded Details: To view your saved geocoded address details, log in and go to My Profile > Geocoded Places of Business.
    • One-Time Submission: Geocoding is a one-time activity. Once submitted, no revisions to the address are allowed. Taxpayers who have already geocoded their addresses through new registrations or core amendments will not need to repeat the process; their addresses will appear as geocoded on the GST portal. Changes to the address on the registration certificate must follow the core amendment procedure, and this geocoding feature will not affect previously saved addresses.
    • Eligibility Criteria: The geocoding functionality is available to all types of taxpayers, including normal, composition, SEZ units, SEZ developers, ISD, and casual taxpayers, regardless of their current status (active, canceled, or suspended).

Conclusion

The addition of geocoding functionality for Additional Places of Business marks a pivotal advancement in ensuring standardized addresses within the GST framework. Taxpayers are encouraged to utilize this feature for improved compliance and accuracy in their registrations.
