Enhanced HSN Search on GST Portal: Simplifying Taxpayer Navigation
Introduction
The GST Portal has launched an improved version of the Search HSN functionality, designed to assist taxpayers in locating the Technical Descriptions associated with different HSN codes for goods and services. This enhancement addresses discrepancies between common trade descriptions and the technical descriptions found in the Customs Tariff Act, 1975, simplifying the process of identifying corresponding HSN codes for taxpayers.
Enhanced Search HSN Functionality
To improve user experience, the revamped 'Search HSN' functionality integrates with the e-invoice database and leverages Artificial Intelligence in several key ways:
1. User-Friendly Search Capability
- Taxpayers can now search for HSN codes and their respective Technical Descriptions using common trade descriptions familiar to them.
- This functionality allows users to enter part of a description, streamlining the search process.
2. Accessibility Options
- The search feature is available for both pre-login and post-login access.
- Users can navigate to it via:
- Home > Services > User Services > Search HSN Code
3. Two Search Options
Taxpayers can utilize either of the following options presented as radio buttons:
- Search by HSN:
- Users can enter HSN codes related to specific goods and services.
- Only numeric input is accepted.
- Upon entering the HSN, an auto-suggest dropdown will display five relevant descriptions, provided at least three characters are entered (maximum eight characters allowed).
- Search by Trade/Commercial/Technical Description:
- Users can input both technical and trade descriptions in the search box.
- After selecting the 'Description' option, they choose whether the search pertains to goods or services.
- Similar to HSN, five related HSN codes will appear based on the entered description if the search box has a minimum of three characters (maximum 40 alphanumeric characters, excluding special characters).
4. View Search Results
- The search results will display the top three commonly used trade descriptions along with their technical descriptions for the entered goods or services.
- Additionally, related HSN codes will be visible. For example:
- Searching a 4-digit HSN code will also show related 6-digit and 8-digit codes.
- A 6-digit search will return related 8-digit codes, while an 8-digit search will not yield additional related codes, as it represents the most precise match.
- All related HSN codes in the results are hyperlinked for further details.
5. Assistance and Downloads
- If a taxpayer cannot find an HSN for their goods or services, they can submit a ticket on the GST Self-Service Portal at [GST Self-Service Portal].
- Taxpayers can also download a comprehensive list of HSN Codes and their technical descriptions in Excel format by clicking the ‘Download HSN in Excel Format’ link at the bottom of the page.
Important Notes
- The revamped Search HSN tool operates using an algorithm rooted in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, corresponding with the e-invoice declaration database. This means the tool aligns the queried descriptions with those utilized by other taxpayers during the e-invoice generation process.
- The displayed Technical and Trade Descriptions correspond to the Customs Tariff Act, 1975 and reflect common usage as reported by taxpayers at the IRN portal. These descriptions are provided solely for taxpayer convenience and are not legally binding.
- While every effort is made to maintain accuracy and current information within the Search HSN tool, it should not be regarded as legal advice. GSTN disclaims any liability regarding accuracy, completeness, or fitness for any specific purpose of the information provided through this facility.
Conclusion
The enhanced Search HSN functionality on the GST Portal is a significant step toward making tax compliance easier for taxpayers. With improved search capabilities and access to detailed information, users can efficiently locate the HSN codes necessary for their goods and services, ultimately streamlining their interactions with the GST system.
