GST Biometric Now Allowed in Home State for Directors & Promoters

Getting a GST registration in India has never been a walk in the park, and for company directors and promoters, the biometric step has often been a headache. But things just got a bit easier, thanks to a recent update from the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN).

On March 3, 2025, the GSTN issued an advisory that quietly solves a major logistical pain: now, certain directors and promoters can complete their biometric authentication at any GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) in their home state instead of trekking to a GSK in their assigned jurisdiction. That’s a big deal if you’ve ever had to fly or drive halfway across a state just to get your fingerprints scanned.

What Changed?

Previously, if your new GST registration got flagged for biometric authentication, you had one option—go to a specific GSK within your jurisdiction, even if that meant hours of travel. Now, if you're a promoter or director of a public or private limited company, and your application is selected for biometric, you get to pick a GSK in your home state. But there are a few conditions:

  • This doesn’t apply to the Primary Authorised Signatory (PAS) if that person also happens to be a promoter or director.
  • Once you pick a GSK, you’re locked in. Choose wisely.

How Does It Work?

If your application gets selected, you’ll get an email notification. That email will include a link that lets you book a slot at a nearby GSK in your home state—assuming you’re not from Uttar Pradesh, Assam, or Sikkim (yet to be covered).

Few More Things You Should Know:

  • Already done biometric once? You're off the hook. No need to do it again.
  • If the Promoter/Director and PAS are the same individual, you can’t use the home state facility. That person must go to the designated jurisdictional GSK.
  • The new option is available in 33 States/UTs. The remaining three will follow soon.
  • This isn’t compulsory. You can still go the old-school route if that’s your preference.

Why Is This Important?

Because biometric authentication isn’t just red tape. It was introduced to tackle fake GST registrations, especially those used to illegally claim input tax credit (ITC). With biometric, the government gets physical verification of the people behind a business—which strengthens its case if things go to court.

In short: this is a win for convenience without compromising compliance. If you're in the middle of registering a company under GST, and you qualify for this new option, it's worth taking advantage of it.

Stay updated, and more importantly, stay compliant.
