KSCAA Seeks Professional Tax Deadline Extension Due to Technical Issues
Introduction
The Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA) plays a crucial role in supporting Chartered Accountants and addressing their professional challenges in Karnataka. Recently, the association has reached out to the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Sri Siddaramaiah, requesting an extension for the payment deadline of Professional Tax under The Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employment Act, 1976.
Detailed Analysis
Background
The requirement to pay Professional Tax arises from The Karnataka Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employment Act, 1976. This tax is obligatory for individuals in various professions, trades, and employments. For the current fiscal year, the payment deadline is set for April 30, 2024.
Technical Glitches
The designated online portal for Professional Tax payments has been beset by ongoing technical issues. Users have reported slow response times and frequent errors, which have rendered the service largely unusable. These problems have significantly hampered taxpayers’ ability to comply within the stipulated timeframe.
Request for Extension
In light of these challenges, KSCAA has formally requested the Chief Minister to grant a 30-day extension for the payment deadline. This extension would alleviate the pressures faced by taxpayers and provide necessary relief to the trade and industry sectors struggling with the website's operational inefficiencies.
Importance of Timely Tax Compliance
Timely tax compliance is essential for safeguarding the state’s economic activities. KSCAA emphasizes that adhering to tax deadlines is vital for maintaining regulatory standards and creating a favorable business environment.
Appeal to Government
In its appeal, KSCAA represents the interests of both Chartered Accountants and the wider trade and industry community in Karnataka. The association highlights the crucial need for government intervention to resolve these taxpayer issues.
Formal Representation to the Chief Minister
The Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (R) (hereafter referred to as 'KSCAA'), established under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act in 1957, is dedicated to the welfare of Chartered Accountants. The association actively represents professionals before various regulatory authorities to resolve issues faced by Chartered Accountants and the business community.
Introduction
Professional Tax is mandated for every individual engaged in a profession or trade or holding any appointment, public or private, as detailed in the Act's Schedule (e.g., traders, doctors, clinics, manufacturers, service providers). The due date for the payment of Professional Tax for the FY 2024-25 is April 30, 2024. However, recent persistent issues with the Professional Tax payment website, including slow performance and frequent error alerts indicating “The service is unavailable,” have emerged.
In light of these challenges, we respectfully urge your intervention to extend the payment deadline by 30 days. This extension would provide essential relief to the affected trade and industry sectors.
As representatives of the accounting profession and various trade sectors, we understand the critical nature of timely tax compliance to sustain economic stability in the state.
Given the hardships posed by these circumstances, we, the members of the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association, on behalf of our community and the wider trade and industry in Karnataka, earnestly request your favorable consideration of our appeal.
