Chief Engineer Baikuntha Nath Sarangi Arrested in Odisha Corruption Case

Arrest of Chief Engineer Baikuntha Nath Sarangi in Corruption Case

When the Odisha Vigilance sleuths moved in on Chief Engineer Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, they didn’t just arrest a high-ranking bureaucrat—they cracked open one of the most staggering disproportionate assets cases the state has seen in recent years. The numbers alone are startling: Sarangi is accused of amassing assets that are 483% higher than his known sources of income.

The arrest comes at a telling moment. Sarangi was nearing his retirement when the Vigilance department launched a late-night operation on May 30, 2025, a move many believe was intentionally timed to prevent him from quietly transferring or concealing his assets.

A Planned Operation Right Before Retirement

The Vigilance team, comprising 26 officers, didn’t leave anything to chance. They carried out seven coordinated raids across properties in Bhubaneswar, Angul, and Pipili, covering both urban apartments and rural estates linked to Sarangi. What followed was a discovery that reads like a crime thriller.

In a desperate attempt to destroy evidence, Sarangi reportedly flung bundles of ₹500 notes out the window of his Bhubaneswar flat. But it was too late. The team recovered around ₹50 lakh from a neighboring rooftop, quickly deploying cash counting machines to tally the haul. By the end of the operation, the total cash seized had swelled to over ₹2.56 crore, including large sums retrieved from his residences in both Bhubaneswar and Angul.

What They Found: A Fortune Far Beyond His Means

A detailed audit revealed assets far outpacing what a public servant’s legal earnings would reasonably support. Here’s a snapshot of what was unearthed:

CategoryDetails
Real EstateTwo double-storey houses in Angul, two flats in Bhubaneswar and Puri, and seven prime plots spread across Bhubaneswar and Angul.
Liquidity/Investments₹2.56 crore in cash, ₹1.5 crore in bank deposits, and another ₹2.7 crore in shares, mutual funds, and insurance products.
Other ValuablesOver 1.14 kg of gold ornaments, 15 imported luxury watches, premium home appliances worth ₹47.57 lakh, a car, and a two-wheeler.

No credible explanation was offered for these holdings. The scale of the assets, stacked against his known sources of income, resulted in a 483% disparity—raising serious red flags.

Legal Action and Where the Case Stands

Sarangi has been booked under multiple provisions of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, including Sections 13(2), 13(1)(b), and 12. The court wasn’t inclined to offer him bail. He has been remanded to judicial custody following his appearance before the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul.

But the story doesn’t end there. The probe has now extended to examine properties and financial holdings suspected to be registered under the names of his wife and other family members. These may well prove to be a key part of the Vigilance department’s case in the coming weeks.

Wider Context: Part of a Larger Anti-Corruption Drive

This isn’t an isolated incident. In fact, Sarangi’s case marks the 61st instance involving a Class-I officer caught in Odisha’s intensified anti-graft operations. The Odisha Vigilance has ramped up its efforts over the past year, having registered over 200 criminal cases against public officials. The cash and asset haul in Sarangi’s case ranks among the largest in the state’s recent memory.

A Look at Sarangi’s Career and Family Web

Sarangi’s journey in government service began back in 1991, with his career culminating in a Chief Engineer post in early 2025. That his arrest happened just ahead of his official retirement is no coincidence—it was a calculated move to ensure no assets could be quietly passed on or hidden under proxy ownership.

As investigators dig deeper, the web appears to stretch into his family. Several of the properties and bank accounts being scrutinised are reportedly held in the names of close relatives, possibly to disguise true ownership.

Final Thoughts

The case against Baikuntha Nath Sarangi is shaping up to be a defining moment in Odisha’s fight against public sector corruption. The sheer audacity of the cash concealment attempt, the scale of asset seizures, and the timing of the operation speak volumes. As legal proceedings unfold and more revelations surface, this could well serve as a turning point in how deeply embedded corruption in the system is tackled. For now, Sarangi remains behind bars, and the Vigilance team has made it clear—no one is above scrutiny.
