Extended Cut-Off Date for Unified Pension Scheme Options in India

Deadline to Opt for Unified Pension Scheme Extended Till 30th September 2025

More time granted to Central Government employees, retirees, and spouses to make their pension choice

In a welcome move for many government employees and retirees, the Ministry of Finance has extended the deadline for opting into the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). Those eligible now have time until 30th September 2025 to submit their applications—an extension from the earlier cut-off of 30th June 2025.

Who Benefits from This Extension?

The extended window applies to the following:

  • Current Central Government employees under the National Pension System (NPS)
  • Retired government servants who were part of NPS and meet the qualifying service criteria
  • Legally wedded spouses of NPS-covered retirees who have passed away

What Is the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS)?

The UPS was rolled out earlier this year through a formal notification on 24th January 2025, followed by operational rules published by PFRDA on 19th March 2025. It offers a guaranteed pension model under the broader NPS framework—a long-standing demand from many government employees.

In simple terms, it allows eligible central government employees to switch from a market-linked pension system to a defined pension benefit, more in line with the old pension structure.

Who Can Choose UPS?

Eligible CategoryConditions
Existing Central Govt. employees under NPSAs of 1st April 2025
New recruits joining Central Govt.On or after 1st April 2025
Central Govt. retirees under NPSSuperannuated/voluntarily retired by 31st Mar 2025
Spouses of deceased NPS retireesAs per official guidelines

Why UPS Matters: Key Benefits at a Glance

  • Assured Monthly Pension: Retirees with at least 25 years of service receive 50% of their average basic pay from the last 12 months. Those with fewer years get proportionally less.

  • Minimum Pension Safety Net: Guaranteed ₹10,000 per month if you’ve completed at least 10 years of qualifying service.

  • Family Security After Death: In the event of the pensioner’s demise, 60% of the pension continues for the family.

  • Gratuity Included: A one-time gratuity payout is provided upon retirement—over and above the monthly pension.

  • Inflation Protection: Regular increases via Dearness Relief (DR) help preserve the pension’s real value.

  • Tax Benefits Intact: All NPS tax advantages, including deductions under Sections 80CCD(1) and 80CCD(1B), continue under UPS.

  • OPS-Like Support for Families: In case of disablement, invalidation, or death, UPS subscribers or their families are still covered under OPS-equivalent rules—providing peace of mind.

  • Family Pension Rules Unchanged: Employees who switch to UPS will continue to be eligible for family and disability pension benefits, provided certain conditions are met—just like under the old pension rules.

  • No Reversal on Policy by Centre: Despite calls from some state governments to roll back to OPS, the Centre remains firm in its UPS roll-out, promoting a structured and modern pension model.
