How to Verify ITR in 2025 & Handle Missed Deadlines

How and When to Verify Your ITR

Back in the day, you had a pretty generous 120 days to get your verification done after filing your return. But things have changed—now, you’ve just got 30 days from the date you file to verify it, whether you choose to do it electronically (which is way easier) or manually. If you miss this deadline, your return might not be considered valid, and that’s a headache you definitely want to avoid.

Electronic Verification:

This is the quickest and most convenient way. You can verify your return using:

  • Electronic Verification Code (EVC)
  • Aadhaar OTP
  • Digital Signature Certificate

It’s all done online, and you don’t even have to leave your house.

Manual Verification:

If you prefer the old-school way, you can sign your ITR-V form (the acknowledgement you get after filing) and send it by regular, speed, or registered post to the CPC in Bengaluru.

What If You Miss the Deadline?

Life happens, right? If you forget to verify your return within 30 days, don’t panic—you’re not out of options. The Income Tax Department gives you a chance to explain why you missed the deadline and request a “condonation of delay.” This is basically a formal way of asking for a little extra time to verify your return.

How to Request Condonation of Delay

Here’s how you can do it, step by step:

  1. Log in to the e-Filing Portal:
  1. Go to ‘My Account’:
  • Look for the ‘Service Request’ option in the upper-left corner. Click it.
  1. Start a New Request:
  • Choose ‘New Request’ and then pick ‘Condonation Request’ from the dropdown. Hit ‘Submit.’
  1. Select Your Reason:
  • Pick the reason for your delay from the list (or type your own explanation if you choose ‘Others’). Then, click ‘Submit’ again.

That’s it! You’ll be able to e-verify your return after submitting this request.

Checking the Status of Your Request

Curious about whether your request was accepted? You can check the status by following these steps:

  • Log in to the e-Filing Portal.
  • Go to ‘My Account’ and click ‘Service Request.’
  • Choose ‘View Request’ and select ‘Condonation Request.’
  • Click ‘Submit’ to see the status of your request.
