Income Tax Return Filing Updates: Excel Utilities and Due Date Extension

Latest Status of Income Tax Return (ITR) Form Utilities and Filing Updates – AY 2025-26

Introduction

With the due date for filing income tax returns now extended till September 15, 2025, many taxpayers are finding themselves watching closely for developments on Excel-based ITR utilities and the online filing systems. If you’re still getting your documents in order or trying to figure out the best way to file, here’s where things currently stand—and what’s now available to help you meet your obligations for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26.

ITR Form Utilities: Current Status

ITR-1 (Sahaj) & ITR-4 (SUGAM)

Let’s begin with the simpler forms—ITR-1 and ITR-4—which were both notified by the CBDT on April 29, 2025.

  • Excel and Online Utilities: These have been available since May 2025, and you can file either through the downloadable Excel utility or directly on the web portal.

Who should be using these?

  • ITR-1: Ideal for resident individuals (excluding those not ordinarily resident) with income up to ₹50 lakh, coming from salary, one house property, certain other sources, and capital gains not exceeding ₹1.25 lakh. Some limited agricultural income is allowed.

  • ITR-4: Best suited for residents (individuals, HUFs, or firms excluding LLPs) who have opted for presumptive income under Sections 44AD, 44ADA, or 44AE—again within the ₹50 lakh threshold. It also accommodates capital gains and agricultural income under specific limits.

ITR-2 & ITR-3

For more complex filings, Excel-based utilities for ITR-2 and ITR-3 have been released and available for download since July 11, 2025. These are tailored for those with capital market investments, foreign assets, or business income.

  • ITR-2: Geared towards individuals or HUFs with multiple house properties, capital gains, overseas holdings, or directorships in companies.

  • ITR-3: If you’re into business, have professional income, dabble in F&O or cryptocurrency trading, or manage an active stock portfolio—this is the form you’ll be looking at.

You can download these from the “Downloads” section of the official income tax e-filing portal.

Filing via Excel Utility (For All Forms):

  1. Complete the return offline using the Excel utility.
  2. Validate the data and generate a JSON file.
  3. Upload the JSON file to the portal.
  4. Don’t forget—e-verification is mandatory and must be done within 30 days of uploading.

Online/Web Filing Availability

Here’s a snapshot of where things stand right now for direct online filing via the income tax portal:

Latest update as of July 23, 2025:

  • ITR-2 is now available for direct online filing through the web portal as of July 18, 2025. That means you can skip Excel and JSON if you prefer using the browser-based system.
  • ITR-3, however, is still only available via Excel utility. The direct filing feature is under development and expected shortly. A separate notification will be issued.

Deadline Extension & Filing Recommendations

Extended Due Date

Yes, the good news is that the filing deadline for most non-audit taxpayers has been extended to September 15, 2025.

This decision was made considering the significant updates rolled out across all ITR forms, various backend changes, and the alignment of TDS/TCS data with return filing modules.

Filing Options: What Works Best Right Now?

  • For ITR-1 and ITR-4: You’re good to go with either the Excel utility or the online portal. Both are fully functional.
  • For ITR-2: You now have a choice. Use the offline Excel tool or file directly on the web portal, which many find more user-friendly now that it supports pre-filled data.
  • For ITR-3: For now, it’s Excel only. But keep an eye out—the web option should be going live soon.

Key Takeaways and Immediate To-Dos

Here are a few practical steps to keep in mind as you prepare your return:

  • Stay Updated: Bookmark the e-filing portal or sign up for alerts. The online version of ITR-3 could be released any day now.

  • Use the Time Wisely: The deadline extension gives you breathing room. Double-check all updates in the forms—especially capital gains schedules, revised asset disclosures, TDS reconciliations, and new income categories.

  • Pick Your Tool: Until web filing is enabled for all forms, it’s safe to use the Excel utility. Once your form is available online, consider switching—it offers pre-filled data and reduces manual errors.

  • E-Verify on Time: Regardless of how you file, your return must be e-verified within 30 days. Failing to do so can void your filing.

  • Keep Documents Handy: For returns involving complex issues like capital gains, foreign holdings, or virtual assets, supporting paperwork is essential—don't wait until a notice arrives.

Conclusion

As of July 23, 2025, the Income Tax Department has rolled out Excel utilities for all key ITR forms—ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, and ITR-4. Direct online filing is live for ITR-1, ITR-2, and ITR-4, while ITR-3 is expected to follow soon.

With the deadline now pushed to September 15, 2025, most taxpayers have ample time to get their filings done correctly. It’s important to use this window to familiarise yourself with the new compliance rules and choose the most accurate and efficient way to file.
