MCA Filings: Beware of Misinformation and Stay Informed
Beware of Fake News: MCA Issues Public Warning on Misleading Information About Company Filings
Published: July 2025
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has issued a strong public advisory urging businesses, professionals, and the general public to exercise caution in light of false and misleading information being circulated online regarding company filings and compliance deadlines.
In a recent communication shared through its verified social media channels, the Ministry clarified that any statements about MCA filings or deadlines not officially released on its website or published through authenticated MCA accounts must be treated as false and unauthorised.
"It has come to our notice that misleading content related to MCA filings is being shared online. Please note, such messages have NOT been issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs." — Official statement from MCA
What You Should Know and Do
1. Always Rely on Official Sources
For any information related to compliance, e-filings, deadlines, or policy changes, refer only to the official MCA website: www.mca.gov.in. This is the sole authoritative source for circulars, FAQs, and legal updates.
2. Verify Social Media Announcements
The Ministry occasionally shares important updates on its verified social media handles, including @MCA21India on X (formerly Twitter) and its official Instagram page. Posts from any unofficial or unverified accounts should not be considered valid.
3. Use the MCA Portal to Track Filing and Company Status
To verify whether a company has filed the necessary forms or to check compliance history, use the “View Company/LLP Master Data” facility on the MCA portal. Users can also track acknowledgment status, download filed forms, or use the ‘Track SRN’ feature for real-time updates.
4. Ignore and Report Suspicious Content
Do not act upon or forward messages received via WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or unverified websites unless they can be cross-verified on the official portal or through MCA’s verified social handles. In cases of suspected misinformation, users are encouraged to report such content via MCA’s official grievance channels.
5. When in Doubt, Ask MCA Directly
If you’re uncertain about a filing requirement, alert, or deadline, contact the MCA helpdesk using the contact details provided on its portal. Avoid guessing or relying on informal advice, especially when compliance consequences are involved.
Why This Matters
Falling prey to misinformation can result in missed deadlines, penalties, or even compliance violations for companies and professionals. The MCA has also warned of the increasing use of phishing emails and fake circulars that imitate official formats to deceive users.
With digital communication channels expanding rapidly, it has become critical to distinguish legitimate regulatory updates from misleading or fabricated ones. Ensuring that decisions are based on verified information is not just prudent—it’s essential for safeguarding corporate interests and maintaining statutory compliance.
