NGO 12A & 80G Registration Guide 2025: Rules, Renewal & Tips

What's This 12A and 80G Stuff Anyway?

Okay, so here's the deal in simple terms :

12A Registration

This is basically your NGO's "get out of jail free" card for income tax . Without this, the government will tax your NGO like any other business, which sucks because you're trying to do good in the world!

80G Registration

This one's for your donors, man . When someone donates to your NGO, they can claim a tax deduction on their own income tax . It's like a win-win - they feel good about helping AND they save some money on taxes.

Trust me, these two registrations are absolute game-changers for attracting donors and keeping your organization financially healthy .

Okay, So What's Changed? (Spoiler Alert: A Lot!)

Bro, if you think you know the rules from a few years ago, think again . The government basically threw the old playbook out the window:

No More "Forever" Registration

Remember when 12A and 80G were like lifetime memberships? Yeah, those days are gone . Now both are only valid for 5 years and then you gotta renew them . It's like your Netflix subscription - forget to renew and you're screwed!

Everything's Gone Digital (No Choice Here)

Forget about walking into government offices with a stack of papers . Everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - has to be done online now . You'll need either a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Electronic Verification Code (EVC) to file your forms . No exceptions, no excuses.

DARPAN ID is Not Optional Anymore

Here's something that trips up a lot of people : If you want 80G registration, you MUST have a DARPAN ID first . It's not a "nice to have" anymore - it's mandatory . Think of DARPAN as your NGO's Aadhaar card in the government system .

Cash Donations? Think Small

This one's a biggie . The limit for cash donations that qualify for tax deduction dropped from ₹10,000 to just ₹2,000 . So if someone wants to give you ₹5,000 in cash, only ₹2,000 will be eligible for their tax deduction . The rest? Nada.

The New Game Plan for 2025

If You're Starting Fresh

New NGOs get what's called "provisional registration" for 3 years first . Think of it as a trial period where the government's like "Let's see if you're legit" . After 3 years, you can apply for the full 5-year registration .

If You're Already Running an NGO

Listen up, this is super important : If your NGO already has 12A or 80G registration, you need to reapply under Section 12AB by September 30, 2025 . Miss this deadline and you could lose all your tax benefits . Set a reminder RIGHT NOW!

Good News for Small NGOs

There's actually some good news coming . Starting April 1, 2025, smaller trusts (with income under ₹5 crores) might get 10-year registration instead of 5-year . It's still being finalized, but fingers crossed!
