TDS & TCS Certificates in India: Your Complete Guide

What Are TDS and TCS Certificates?

First things first, these TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and TCS (Tax Collected at Source) certificates aren’t just boring paperwork. They’re your proof — like a tax receipt — that some tax was either deducted from your income or collected from you before the money even hit your hands. And trust me, when tax season arrives, you’ll thank your stars for having these sorted.

TDS for Salaried Folks: Form 16

The big one for salaried folks like you and me is Form 16. Think of it as a report card for your salary and taxes. Every year, your employer hands this over, usually by June 15th of the following financial year. So for this year, mark June 15, 2025, on your calendar. It’s split into two parts — Part A and Part B.

Part A: The Basics

Part A is like the skeleton; it has your employer’s name, your PAN, how much tax got chopped off your pay cheque every quarter, and other official details. You can grab this from the TRACES portal — it’s super handy.

Part B: The Salary Breakdown

Then comes Part B, the juicy part. It breaks down your salary, allowances, deductions (hello, Section 80C and 80D savings!), and explains exactly how much tax you ended up paying. Ever wondered why your in-hand salary feels like it’s playing hide and seek? This is where you find the answers.

TDS on Other Incomes: Form 16A

If you’re freelancing on the side, earning interest from FDs, or collecting rent, you’ll meet Form 16A. It’s the non-salary twin of Form 16 and gets issued quarterly. This one’s also available on TRACES, and just like its sibling, it details how much TDS was snipped from your payments.

TCS Certificates: Form 27D

Then there’s Form 27D, which comes into play for TCS. It’s what a seller gives you when they collect tax from you at the time of a big purchase or specific business deals. Ever noticed an extra tiny tax charge when buying something expensive? Yep — that’s TCS. And this certificate is your proof. Sellers have 15 days after filing their TCS statement to hand this over to you.

What’s New in 2025?

Scrapping of Higher TDS/TCS Rates

Good news — those higher TDS/TCS rates that used to apply if you didn’t file your returns on time (Sections 206AB and 206CCA) — gone from April 2025. Huge sigh of relief.

Revised TDS Thresholds on Interest

The TDS threshold on interest has gone up. If you’re a senior citizen, no TDS till your interest income crosses ₹1 lakh. For the rest of us, it’s ₹50,000. Finally, small transactions won’t stress you out.

The New Default Tax Regime

India now has a new default tax regime. If you don’t specifically pick the old one, you’re automatically dropped into the new one. Employers are now legally bound to consider this while calculating your TDS. So if you prefer the old deductions-loaded regime, make sure you tell your employer in time.

Introduction of Section 194T

A fresh section, 194T, has also been introduced. If you’re a partner in a firm and get paid remuneration, there’s now a 10% TDS on that. It’s a welcome move to plug some loopholes in the system.

Adjustments for Other Income

If you have income from other sources — let’s say you’ve got a freelance gig or bank interest — and some TDS was already deducted on it, your employer has to factor that in while calculating your salary TDS. No double taxation drama anymore.

Deadlines and Penalties

Deadlines are also pretty firm now. Like I said earlier, your employer better hand over your Form 16 by June 15, or they get slapped with a ₹200 per day penalty. Safe to say, they’re fairly motivated to stay on schedule.

How to Download Your Certificates

Getting these certificates is actually simpler than people think. The TRACES portal is your one-stop shop. Just log in with your PAN, head to the certificate section, and download what you need. Each certificate has a unique number and digital signature, so you can even verify its authenticity online.

Excel Format Downloads for Easy Analysis

If you’re someone juggling multiple income sources or running a small business, you’ll love this — TRACES lets you download your certificates in Excel format too. It’s a lifesaver for sorting, analyzing, and importing data into accounting software. Helps a ton during audits and tax planning.

Government Relaxations and Extended Deadlines

The government’s been generous with some deadline extensions and penalty waivers for genuine mistakes as everyone gets used to these new rules. And the TDS compliance calendar remains pretty straightforward: deposit TDS by the 7th of the next month and file returns quarterly.

Common Issues and How to Handle Them

Yes, there are occasional hiccups — mismatches between your certificates and Form 26AS, or a sluggish TRACES site. Pro tip? Keep an eye on your Form 26AS, match it with your certificates, and nudge your deductor if something seems fishy. The system’s getting better though, with more automation, real-time certificates, and even talks of mobile apps and blockchain tech down the road.
